Dirty Stinkin' Commies! (And Other Improprieties)

So it has come down to it at last. The final nail in the coffin. The ending waltz on the dance floor. The last Pringle in the can. Or something. Either way, we have sworn in another president, we have upheld our particularly American brand of Democracy, and we are all certainly awaiting every politician to be taken into custody, executed, and then for Trump to rule forever. Q just has to be correct right? The track record is.... stunning? Pictured: Q at his computer, or something. Creator: Rembrandt  |  Credit: Hermitage     Either way, our country has reached the dawning of a new administration. An event that has happened 45 previous times, and will undoubtedly happen many many more. But along the way, there was a bit of... discourse, if you could call it that. Most of it was spurned on by the greatest of all threats in this day and age, the Keyboard Warriors. Yes, this multi-class, 12th level, 5h Edition DnD champion has, for the last 5-6 ye...

Treatise on the End of the Human Race

The year is 2592, and the last of humanity has just died. She didn’t have a name. She didn’t have a place of residence. Long had humanity abandoned sedentary living places after the cataclysms that befell them. She died at the ripe old age of 43. Old for the time at least. In the past century, many barely made it to 30. She had no language; coherent words being of little use with no one to speak to. She was alone on a quiet world, devoid of almost all complex life or vegetation, scrapping by on what little food and water she could manage to obtain. Her mate had passed on nearly 2 years ago, but she had little concept of years. She knew that it was man moon cycles, and that he had gone in his sleep, never to wake up. She had no concept of an afterlife. For her, there were only two states; here, and gone. As she ventured through the desolate wastelands of which we used to roam, she regarded things she saw, but had no concept of. Ol...

The New Mythologies - Part 4: Gods and Dollar Signs

So here we are. This. Is. It. We've gone from Greek Gods, to The Golden Age of Superheroes, to the Nineties Anti-Hero Age. And now we've come to the current era. The era that I feel is a defining point in our culture, for better or worse. This is the Age of the Cinematic Universes. Simply put, the superheroes we idolize today come in a mush bigger package than they used to. Gone are the days of rushing down to the nearest corner store to pick up the latest comics. Sure, the comics themselves are still around, but our heroes predominantly grace the big screen now. Officially starting off in 2008 with the release of Iron Man , the Marvel Cinematic Universe , or MCU for short, has recently become the highest grossing film franchise in history, eclipsing such powerhouses as James Bond , Harry Potter , and Star Wars . These films, which have collectively grossed over $17 Billion , are forces to be reckoned with. Entire studio schedules have been altered to accommodate their...

The New Mythologies - Part 2: Age of the Superhero

So, quick recap of the last part: Zeus = Bad God? Hades = Good God? Hercules = Misguided Demigod? Disney = Greedy People Society = Doomed Alright, now that we got that out of the way, SUPERHEROES ! That's right. Today we will be discussing what I strongly believe are our new mythologies, superheroes. Now, some context. I am fully aware that none of these characters has ever been worshiped or had patronage in real life towards them. For the most part at least. But, the simple fact that many have been used to explore complex and detailed emotions and problems that face our society warrants our examining. Many people look up to these fictional heroes because they embody principles and ideals that we ourselves wish to strive for. Many times we find ourselves wondering how these characters would solve a problem or obstacle before we ever think about what real role models would do. This is why these characters are so important to our society as it is today. The fact that many of ...

The New Mythologies - Part 1: The Old Gods

QUICK ! How many have seen Disney's Hercules ? 1, 2, 4... Okay, that's at least 10 people. Didn't want to make a post no one cared about. I any case, what do I remember about Hercules? The Disney version of course. Well, he is the son of doting father Zeus who is sent down from Mount Olympus to live as a mortal because the evil nasty Hades was, jealous, or something. So Zeus, who is totally so sweet guys, sends him away as a child to protect him. Over time, Hercules grows up, becomes a strapping young man, learns of his secret lineage, and eventually, confronts Hades and stops him from releasing the Titans, ancient mythological beasts of pure hatred and destruction. Along the way, he is assisted by a wise cracking Satyr, a WOKE-AF strong woman named Meg, and a funny, dog-like Pegasus. Its only after defeating Hades and the Titans that he is allowed to take his godhood and earn his rightful place on Mount Olympus. Sounds plenty wholesome! Fun for the whole famil...
